Win 8 personalisation

I originally arrived on this forum looking for live desktops for Windows 8. I am out of luck. Similarly I bought Stardock's Windowblinds for Win7 shortly before upgrading to Win8. Windowblinds doesn't work with Win 8.

What has Microsoft done to Win 8 to make manipulation of it's desktop so difficult for third parties? Previously, applications were able to quickly adjust to each new iteration of Windows so why this sudden problem?

we got a laptop with windows 8 on, and we missed it having the usual bottom left hand side old start menu etc, so we installed a free program called classic shell, and we got back the old menu, i think Microsoft have deigned it more for these touch screen type things like tablets etc.
