There's loads of 'free' webhosts about but they tend to operate with varying degrees of success. Most are either very slow or insist you include various adds within your site or have some other restriction (a common one is you must make a certain number of posts per month on an associated forum).

You may find there's a webhost provided by your local chamber of commerce (or other local organisation, or even pehaps your local council) specifically set up to promote local business. These can work suprisingly well as long as your requirements are fairly simple (no huge 'flash' animations).

Generally though, webhosts are fairly inexpensive usually costing only a few ? per month for a decent service (1and1.co.uk starter pack ?2.49 per month with 1st 6 months free). These will usually allow much greater control and flexibility on your site.

note, that regardless of webhost, you'll likely need to purchase a suitable domain name. A .co.uk domain will cost you ?3 or so per year (usually 2 years min). You can get free domains (.co.cc or .co.cu etc) but nobody would trust a business with these.

i would buy a cheap domain to start with if your looking at starting up your own business very cheap, and it will look better, say pspmixer.com, than pspmixerfreesite.com, about ten years ago i built a free website for my other hobby, i remember just setting up free websites on loads of free ones, till i liked the best one just uploaded the site i had built then just closed the others down, but trust me the one i picked (yahoo geocities) it closed down. look how much bandwith you get from them, also remember a lot of people use mobile technology to view the net so test it that way as well, lot of online test sites for the mobile world, just put your site address in after building it, it will let you test/emulate it on ipad ect phones, if you want people to visit your site it will be hard to get up the search engines at first i would say unless you pay them ie google etc, so business cards and flyer's may help spread the word. good look,

ps the coder beat me by a minute on my post

but would need help uploading it either way if it was free or not

edit - if i used .co.cc id be only trying it see how it goes and if it kicks off i could consider using a .com etc

Free Web Hosting Services, page 1 - 100 Best Free Web Space

try a selection and see which one suits you.

Before you choose one you may need to work out a rough design for your site and decide what kind of content you want it to include as different hosts may include the ability to handle different kinds of content. For instance, most webhosts are linux based and often dont play well with websites designed with Microsoft products.

To get a free domain name for testing try -

Dot TK is the only top level domain name registry that provides free domain names. Get your free domain name today, before it's gone.

              or
CU.CC - Free Domain Registration + Free DNS Service.

Once you register the free domain name you will need to point it to the proper dns server of your webhost for things to work. You will also likely need to place the proper entries into the dns handler of your webhost.

They both work fine, i'm presently using half a dozen of them for various things. The registration sites sometimes go down for short periods but its rare they would both fail at the same time.

Edit: Just registered a new domain on the .cu.cc site without problem.

What problem are you having ?

Edit2: The .cu.cc sister site www.cuccfree.org seems to work quite well for a free hosting site. The control panel is reasonably standard and the limits seem generous. Just created a site using the domain I just registered and it was up within 5 minutes

                            need to update nameserves

so what ever host you are using u put there nameserves in will take 24-28 to propagate.

another free hosting is Servers free – free web hosting servers, servers for free, free server

also with free domains like cu.cc these are banned on facebook, so u cant promote on there, i noticed that when i was messing about creating a ecommerce site
