    Data/File Encryption on USB/HDD/Disc??

    Needing some more help here

I have a collection of videos I'd like to protect so that they can't be copied.

Does anyone know of a way to protect them from being copied? I will probably either have them stored onto DVD discs or just a large capacity hard drive.

    Thanks in advance!

If u want to save them on an external harddidsk you can try TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows 7/Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux also u can find there instructions how to make it work..i can guarantee one thing..that it works amazingly..

Hey thanks for the reply. I was actually reading on that last night but wasn't entirely sure what it could do exactly. I'll try to put some work sometime today and respond with some feedback for the thread.

if you have them on a hd then you can hide the video files using properties for each file then return them when you want to view them, if you read the following link it will tell you how to return them to view.

Show Hidden Files and Folders in Windows 7 or Vista

If its to stop people viewing them entirly, you could use win rar and place them inside a passworded .rar file.

If staying on a local pc, you could set ownerships to prevent unathorised access

if you set the properties as hidden in windows then they will still be seen by somebody running a live linux disc (as i have),you would be better off just creating a mounted file with trucrypt (which i have also done) or you can use a program called kuruptos pro to encrypt your videos

                Data/File Encryption on USB/HDD/Disc??

Cool. I'll try out Truecrypt later on today and attempt to copy the videos from the disc afterwards.

I think you're asking to somehow copy protect the videos like a form of DRM? So that people would be able to view them but not create copies easily? Like a DVD movie you buy in a shop?

From this point of view, if the user can view the video, they can copy the video, although I'm sure there's some software out there that would deter your average computer user from taking a copy. Google for "dvd copy protection" or similar terms, lots of software turns up although I'm not sure how good it will be.

What exactly are you trying to protect?

                    Data/File Encryption on USB/HDD/Disc??

Trying to protect video files. I'm not creating a DVD per say that's viewable on a DVD player or anything. I want to burn a disc that will contain video file data. I want it to be viewable but not copyable (is that a real word haha?).

Try security and owner ships. There will be read only etc there where you can set stuff but unsure if will work

Yeah TrueCrypt didn't do exactly what I thought it would =\ Or maybe I'm using it wrong...

Is there a way to store the file on a protected login but create shortcuts to the files?

If stored on a Admin account other user accounts would not be able to access them directly. But if a shortcut exception can be arranged, the files could be played through a player without allowing access to the file itself.

Just an idea, no idea if you can get it to work in the real world.

Would have to be done in security and ownership properties. For instance. Admin owns file. Users can view but not modify. I will do some messing see if it will work.

Think there was a thread similar to this a while ago.

Another option would be create an iso with files in. Mount it in daemon tools so its a virtual dvdrom.

Hmmm. I like where Canker is going but the storage will need to be pretty large after my collection is complete.

I'm estimating the total size of all videos to be about 100 GB or so. That'd be a lot to store on a cloud somewhere.

Cunny - I've seen the attributes in Windows when you click properties on a file to where you can make it "read only." Is that what you're talking about? It seems like it would be pretty easy to crack.
