    Seagate hard drive clunking

Hi can anyone advise if there is a DIY fix for my seagate barracuda ST3500418AS?

The drive came up with the error CRC and now has clunking.

I have not powered it since to protect it from further damage.

I need to recover the data though

Any help on the matter is greatly appreciated.

tricky issue it could be for a number of reasons why its doing that
bad sectors (most common with seagate hard drives)
pcb board issues and needs replacing sometimes
hard drive on its way out

where you moving large files across at the time?

have you tried the seagate diagnostic tools

    (seatools)

    Windows version *tutorial Here http://knowledge.seagate.com/article...S/FAQ/202435en*
    SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

Bootable version needs to be burned to disc *tutorial here http://knowledge.seagate.com/article...S/FAQ/201271en*
    SeaTools for DOS | Seagate

Their is also command prompt you can use
the chkdsk command to scan for errors and if need be

so to the start type cmd run as admin
    type chkdsk /r C:
change c with your drive letter

it may ask you to restart the pc so it can scan it during boot so it can
unmount the devices needed in order to fix it.

    hope you get it fixed

If u havent tried yet, it could be maybe useful to try one of the hdd recover softwares, but first it is better to do a repair of the damaged area (surface) with hdd regenerator and then use stellar or recuva to make a copy of the files that u want to extarct.

      Pls let me know

Hi can anyone advise what the state if play is with this drive. The drive originally developed a CRC fault and over the space of a day it now just spins for 2-3 seconds and clunks then stops spinning.

Unfortunately the data on the drive is purely personal photos and means a lot to me, but I can't afford the hefty data recovery bill that Seagate is offering.

Would you believe the dam this is still in warranty till July and Seagate will happily replace it, but charge for data recovery. (Surely if it is in warranty they should suffer the bill of data recovery?)

I have tried Seatoolz and it fails.

Anyway I have purchased a like for like drive to try and salvage myself if possible.

Any advice on where the fault maybe and what I can do to repair it.

Just need to salvage the data.

        Any help is greatly appreciated
