Hi M8, This really a personnel choice...

Intel Still has the edge on performance, but value Amd can not be beat. I would go for a Amd black edition cpu... In theory these chips have the ability for extreme overclocking with the right cooling.

Everything else follows on from cpu choice...

One rule i would follow at the moment is if you go for Amd then get a Ati GPU and if you choose Intel Then get a Nvidea GPU. These combos tend to give better results.

When I build a new Pc i think about what i will use it for...
then deicide how many expansion slots i will need for addon cards ect. careful planning saves a lot of headaches later on. Hope this helps a little... But there is no easy answer you will just have do do your home work and see what feels right for you.

    Best of luck.

      Get yourself a Roadrunner.

Its built from a Triblades (4x PowerXcell 8i's + 2x Opteron 2210's with 32gb of ram) these push just around 400Gflops (floating point operations)

Theyre housed in BladeCenters which contain 3 triblades each (so this pushes the total up to 1.2Tflops)

Then these are housed in standard 42U Racks (these can house 4 bladecenters a pop) so a rack will push through 4.8Tflops

Now as you can see in the picture theres more than one rack, infact on site theres 15 racks in a node (bringing us up to roughly 72 Teraflops)

Course 1 clusters fairly meagre, its been expanded to 18 nodes so your pushing 1.3PetaFlops out of the thing.

Ideal for plotting weather calculations on a global scale, multiple astro trajectories and figuring out just WTF 42 actualy means.
It will likely still have a hard time runing crysis at full settings though.

Its also fairly adequate for cracking encryption at a fair rate , AES, 3DES etc... not a problem for this monster, it might take a few weeks to run a cycle but hey why not right?
