If you cannot send messages with Thunderbird, this page provides a series of steps you can follow to check for common problems.

    Hope this helps padre.

I've always had that problem since VM stopped their email hosting & outsourced to Google.

Not read the link provided. But I just hit send again after it fails & it's always sent correctly.

I use Thunderbird. The only problems are in setting it up as I'm on a ntlworld.com address. Thunderbird will always try to default to a google address because they host VM's mail service.

            Manual settings needed.

Other than that it's the occasional smtp fail when sending. But clicking send again, works every time.

ok got this sorted now and heres how the server was not responding correctly on the default port. i had to set the outgoing server to:

              Description: Irrelevant
              Server Name: smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
              Port: 25
              Connection security: STARTTLS
              Authentication method: Normal password
              logon name ...whatever it is
