System Restore/ XP

Hi guys, I am running win xp home edition with s/pack 3.
Problem I have :- I have not been able to restore to any previous point for some time.
The restore system is switch on/ disc usage set 2 max.
any advice welcome.thanks ( not a computer buff)

Go to Start-All programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore

Then you can see Your restore points. If not You must create new one! Best solution ever-MAKE BACKUP!

Yes I have done that many times, I can create a new restore but cannot restore to restored previous points, the pc' goes through the motions and restarts but informs it cannot restore and nothing has been changed.

Take whatever info/files u need off the hdd and then try a fresh install of xp, sounds a bit extreme but in my experience it often ends up being the quicker option in the long run. You could also try using third party backup software if you dont want to wipe ur hdd and start fresh.

I think You have major problems with Your registry then!
Try to backup on a DVD and then reinstall!
XP is very harmful if You have lost/deleted some important registry entries!

The pc is a Medion so I do have a recovery disc.
Q. If I use the recovery disc after backing-up will this disc erase all other installed progs.? the back-up partition is on the h/drive, will the recovery disc clear this also?
Q. What does the recovery disc actually do.

It can rebuild Your registry but not the restore point! All Your partitions will be untouched!I think the best solution is reinstalling (clean install) Your XP.
