It really depends what your needs are bud... the following is just my opinion based on experience.

Performance & reliability i recommend :
Lg external hdd xd2... write speed small files 15.2mb/sec Lrg files 28.7mb/sec. Price around ?70. its a small solid no frills drive with usb connections only.

Iomega ego write speeds 13.5mb/sec small files 29mb/sec lrg files. price around ?85. again small solid but nice looking drive. (i think misco.co.uk had them for around ?75.) again only usb connection.

Another option is to get a nas device... i have a 2 bay 1 which can hold 2 1tb drives... i use this with the hot swap caddie and between them they cover all my storage needs... and keep my options open for the future.
