    which device?
a make and model number would be handy.

I had a docking station (dell or hp if i remember correctly) that had usb to serial on it many moons ago that ran via com9 under xp sp3 for reasons i couldnt fathom nor configure.

I was doing some light dreamcast homebrew work at the time and only figured it out by switching the com numbers in my interface software out of sheer frustration and found that 9 magicaly worked (although still the slow crawl via serial that you grow to expect, large elf files took eons)

No explanation, no way to change it, it was 9 or nowt. Nothing even remotely related under device manager, and in the same boat as yourself documentation wise.

Id suggest hooking up a device to test and attempting to go sequentialy through the com range till you find it, its a pain in the ass but the best advice i can give at this juncture.
