I need a new network based HDD...which one?

I need some advice.

I have been using a desktop PC with connected HDD's to store all my data. Including diagnostic programs and .tib files.

I am selling up the desktop and moving to laptop, to free up space in my house.

So obviously i cannot have multiple HDD's connected to the USB's of my laptop that i will use.

I tested the option to connect a HDD via USB to my router. But the transfer rate was painfully slow.

My question is:

What is the fastest network based accessible drive i can buy for not very expensive?. I was looking into WD MY CLOUD NAS drive 4TB. But unsure.

What you need is a NAS (Network attached storage)
Qnap and Synology offer a good selection of NAS devices for home users with plenty of functionality.
They normally come without hard rives so you can equip them as per your needs.
Best use a minimum of two hard drives in a RAID so you have data redundancy if one disk fails.

Yes, i've been looking at the WD my cloud as it seems cheaper than the synology and qnap. I am looking for a midrange type one.

Do they work wirelessly?.

Do you know the transfer speed to and from the NAS if it were connected to a router?.

If i connect 2 external hdd's to my computer and transfer from one to the other i get about 20mbs.

Im looking for something 100mbs or higher.

I am using a Asus router N66U and I would be connecting a NAS directly to its USB port I guess via LAN.

Still there are more variable things to consider. Like Ethernet cables, switches hdd cache speeds and so on.

Personally I had a netgear stora, though old now I could get about 30mb second copying to and from.

I know newer Nas and drives you can achieve about 4 times the speeds. I'm not saying you will achieve this but you can. I'd do some research on Google to assist you further
