I hope someone can help!

I currently have a windows xp pc and have ran the upgrade advisor which shows my pc is compatable for windows 7.

My question is I dont want to install my new windows 7 disk over the top of my xp just in case something goes wrong, and i only have small hard drive. I am going to buy a 1TB hard drive and install 7 on to there. If all works ok will i be able to switch hard drives from 7 back to xp or could this affect the why the pc will boot like the bios.

if you remove the XP hdd and install 7 on the new one then put the XP hdd back in, you can dual boot useing the bios.

Both disks will have a master boot record and active partition so the only thing that will make one boot and not the other would be the bios settings. Selecting the HDD for XP as first book device would make the puter bios ignore the MBR on the windows 7 hdd and just boot XP. Same for the other way round. All settings for that system, xp or 7, will stored on there own HDD so should not be a problem to run either while you settle down and get use to 7.

Also when you happy. Make use of the Windows Easy Transfer software in 7 to move all ya use data over from XP to windows 7. Then store the XP HDD in a safe place. Use it later if needed to recover data from the 1tb drive incase it goes tits up

When you get your new HD why dont you partition it and install XP and 7 on it as a dual boot, this way when you start up you'll have the option of choosing which OS you want to use, its very easy to do.
