    crashed pc, arrrgh. Nearly done

PC went absolutely crazy yesterday, would just keep cycling to the beginning of the boot up system, a 0x000007b error apparently.
Anyway took the nuclear approach and reinstalled windows, nearly got it back to the way i need it, amazing how much junk you gain over time.

I take it you got the "blue screen of death" as it is known.

Quite often windows files can become corrupt due to installation of new applications or files and through time your hard drive also gets a bit older and can delvelop bad sectors.

sometimes it is nice to do a clean reinstall if you have all your important files backed up.

sometimes it is possible to restore your computer to an earlier state. If you previously set a system restore point. You can set restore point bye going into the "start menu and all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore" ( valid for win xp different on other op systems)

there is also normally a feature on windows operating disks which allow you to do a repair to windows files rather than a complete format and re-install

Windows stop messages are a pain. Basically in your case, sounds like boot records went awol

You may receive a "Stop 0x000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error message after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2

If it is boot up problems you should use repair console from your windows cd, or in your case, reinstal would be fine.

forgot to say that the problem started last night when the battery ran out and we plugged in the charger, when it started it went into lock mode so we shut down and got rid of the prob.

Should have really started your own thread jasbo m8.

Get yourself a copy of vista, Dont format, just instal a clean copy. Get what you need saved onto disc then do a complete format.

You could format then run a recovery.
You could also take the hdd out and place into a caddy and browse for files that way, if there was any passwords on the account in question then you will need to take ownership of the directories each at a time

                  So its a BSOD.

I would do the above. Instal windows, dont format, back your stuff up. Allot of BSOD are Hardware related.

Enter bios and set it to boot from cd/dvd first
