I bought a Laptop charger off ebay and it turned out to be one of those cheap Chinese imports, Anyway bottom line is it killed my Lappy. I took it into a pc repair shop and he checked the adapter and the Laptop. Turns out the chargers voltage was dropping down to 15v and then spiking upto 30v, resulting in frying the mobo.

I have been in touch with the company i bought it from and they asked for a photo of the charger and a close up of the writing on the label. I sent them that and a copy of the report plus a copy of the bill. They replied saying they had refunded my money and would i like a small present for compensation
I told them i wanted a replacement Laptop and reimbursing fior the cost of the bill.

I then got another email saying, that there is a programme built into computers which would prevent the excessive voltage from damaging the Laptop. So it must have been a fault with the Laptop.
They said they had never had any problems before and would i like a small present for compensation. I told them i didn't think they were pc experts and i had paid for a diagnostic report from a professional which states the damage was done by the charger.

I told them if i didn't get reimbursed i would be going to Trading standards and then to a small claims court. They have not replied since, That was early this morning.

Thing is, where do i stand. They are regged as a business on ebay but when i requested the info all i got was a phone number and no address. Obviously they are trading in England so i would have thought i had a case. I'm going to the citizens advice to ask them some advice. Has anyone got any thoughts or advice for me.

If there has been no complaints on the account similar mate it may end up going nowhere.

Might just happen that when you got the charger something was due to go on the motherboard.

Providing the information was correct as and when you bought the item and the item matches that discription the you have no case.

If it differs from what they described then you have a case.

I have made chargers myself from old chargers etc.

So they could say that it was not theres and you must have used a variable charger and outed the board.

But if the charger is showing faults then fight it as electrical items sold on ebay by businesses must be supplied as specified. Tested and regulated as well.

The only way to prove its the charger is by testing in the exact same laptop as yours to prove it is not suitable for that item.

Well i still have the receipt for the lappy which was only 18 months old. The voltage for the Lappy was 23v i think, but the diagnostic showed it dropping as low as 15v then surging right up to 30v. So i'm going to take the ~~~~ers as far as i can.

The laptop defo useless now though? Not just blew fuses or caps?

Yea m8.~~~~ed. Even blew the hard drive. So i can't even salvage that.

This is going to be hard to prove. I nearly had a very similar problem on ebay recently. A charger had broken for a laptop, an advent make. When i looked for a replacement, i could not find the correct volts and amps as the original, even though these were advertised for the model. So check if it is the correct volts and amps (matching the old 1) on the charger, if not then its been misleading advert if they advertised it for your laptop.

I contacted the company selling the chargers on ebay and basically said, you are selling chargers for a model laptop that is not the correct specs. I sent photo's of the old charger to them and they confirmed that it would not work on the laptop.

In the end i contacted the 'tech guys' (i hate those people) and they sent me a new charger correct for the laptop free of charge as it was in warrenty. But locating a comaptable charger was a nightmare in the least.

BE VERY CAREFULL WHEN BUYING LAPTOP CHARGERS ON EBAY, ALWAYS CHECK CORRECT VOLTS AND AMPS.
