    Sky Broadband fair usage policy

    Hi
Am getting Sky broadband installed in the next couple of weeks. I currently have Virgin broadband. The people at Virgin said that I need to watch my bills with Sky as they charge for any usage they consider excessive. My kids spend the evening on Xbox live and I use the internet on the laptop at the same time, have had no probs with Virgin but what do Sky consider excessive usage? I remember a friend getting a large bill from them a few years ago for about ?200!!

Has anyone else had any problems with billing etc?

l think they just lower the speed when u go over there download limit , its not like phones where they charge for extra mb download ..

I think thats what they all do/did(the ones with limited)

I remember back in the day my N*L BB did that, once you went over 2gb within a month... the download speed was capped from about 40kbs to about 5kbs

I remember them ads back then for unlimited BB that used to show limited BB being used up then a huge message coming up on the screen with the words "usage limit reached".. so full of crap

Saying that my BT BB is the mid package and I download shit loads a month with no restrictions that I can see anyway

My pcs never "not" downloading something.. Im talking films/games/software.. gigs of usage a month I go through and have never once seen a capped speed(like under 50kbs) and the speed rises to about 400kbs around 11pm

I love it!!...considering I dicked around with 150kb BB back in the day.. this shits super fast .. never stops

          Am on Sky.

I was on Nynex, which became NTL which became Virgin.

I have never had any contact from Sky about my usage.
I have had contact fron NTL and Virgin about my usage.

I am on the top package from Sky. I can do anything from 10gig to a couple of hundred gig a month depending on my work load. The one and only contact I have had with Sky BB department was about a month after i had it installed. They contacted me to tell me they are trying some things to improve my speed and that if I get any problems then to contact them right away.

Sky has fair usage. But they only going to complain to you if you on a lower package and hammering it. Both the free one and the mid one have a cap. The top one is unlimited right now. This may change in the future however.

Something that gets overlooked massively.. is the fact that unlimited doesnt actually mean unlimited downloads so-to-speak

What the umlimted term truly means is surf the web as much as you like' and download a good deal of stuff... just not tooo much..... limited broadband usage can mean some other things especially on phone network BB like O2, because usage also falls under ANYTHING thats upping.transfering data from the web to your pc not just downloading.. for example browsing sites like this one is still deemed usage and a certain amount of data is involved in you seeing this site.. also youtube is a step up from your typical browsing as higher data rates are involved in streaming videos and so on.. these are still all factors in data usage that people over look and think that a certain amount of data usage is only limited to downloads

Thats why youtube can become very slow on a low package limited broadband.. if your pulling to much data as well as downloading a lot even your overall browsing transfer speeds in general can be capped... not just download speeds

A good example is O2 BB.. once that usage is up it stops working even if you havent downloaded a thing... because browsing in general is still using data usage

              with sky there's 3 options

with a fone package the costs are as following:
              2gb limit = free
              10gb limit = ?5
              unlimited limit = ?10

if u dont have the fone package, add an extra ?5 to each of those prices

also sky's unlimited package has no fair use policy. they are (as far as i know of) the only company that offers real uncapped usage.
also if your on one of the 2 lower packages, if you go above your allowance for 3 months out of 6 (i think) then they have th right to automatically upgrade you and you'll either recieve a letter or e-mail

              hope that helps

                Hi Guys

I work for sky what happens is if u go over the 10gb (for example) twice in the 6 months what happens is u get automically upgraded but with sky they charge u a month in advance so really u pay ?20 (if u do have the phone if not ?30) and u can't downgrade for 31 days but if u have xbox live etc... on at nite u would be better just taking the unlimited package saves time and hassle ...

                Hpe this helps

Sky are your best Deal! i have been with them for years now since i moved from NTL, (now Virgin) i have downloaded huge files and uploaded alot too & im on the Unlimited package, with multi-room sky plus etc not once have i ever had any complaint from them, they are the best provider around to be honest, no fuss, no nothing, and really fast BB. if your wireless box breaks down or u just fancy a upgraded one, with sky u just pick up the phone tell them its knackard and in the next 2 days u got a brand new box, but with Virgin on the other hand, u have to threaten to leave them before they even think about sending u a wireless box even if you been with them for years. they are the biggest waste of space ever!

Sky is your best bet buddy! stay well clear of talk talk too they are worse than Virgin!

                      good luck dude.

                        How fast broadband?

Cant be much more that 8 meg as this is all a BT line can just about stand until they lay the fibe optics. Unless you are in theyre test area.

Do a speetest here Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and post up your results.

As for customer service. I have never had any problems with virgin. And theyre boxes dont break that much to be honest unlike skys.

Yes thats pretty much your lot with a BT line. So if Street Hawk thinks 6-8 meg broadband and .3meg upload is really fast then somethings wrong.

I cant fault virgin for any of theyre services to be honest except the price to add Sky Sports to the Tv package. Quoted at an extra ?12.50 a month.

But to say sky is the best all round is not true.
