    Replacement harddrive

Hi, My old Dell D600 laptop harddrive is goosed as i get the blue screen of death all the time now. I want to buy a replacement but not sure what i need. I have searched d600 hdd and i get some results but they are expensive. The spec for mine is 40gb eide/ata-100. So was wondering if a ide/ata 40gb hdd is the same and would work???

You can purchase it at any store with computer parts. You need to look up for disk size 2,5" and connection EIDE/ATA. Other data as the size is irrelevant (since you can't purchase smaller than the one you have anymore) so any disk with this two data will be appropriate for your laptop. It costs from 45 € upward.

I have been told that any 2.5 ide hdd up to 160gb will fit my dell d600. Wether its true or not i'm not sure. I was informed(from another forum) that as long as its ide and not sata then it will fit. Is this not the case??

Yes, this is exactly what I wrote. sorry if it wasn't clear. The size does not matter you can buy hdd that is larger than 160Gb, infact any size you like. So at the store demand:
        - 2'5" disk
        - IDE connector (not SATA)

btw if ur getting a blue screen, it might be because of the RAM and not the hard drive..

Have you try to reinstall the operating system? Because blue screen does not meant the hard disk is faulty or gone.

Most likely the hard disk is faulty if the hard disk having cranking sound... any 2.5" ide hard disk may help to solve your problem.Good luck.

What error codes are you getting?

To enable the laptop to stay on the BSOD, right click on my computer properties, goto the advance tab, under start up and recovery, uncheck auto restart
                  sigpic

If it installs windows ok(like he said it did) then the HD may be ok

What about running an OS from a thumbdrive then hit youtube or somewhere that will use alot of ram and see if it BSODs

Im gona upgrade the RAM, then see how i go. I have a replacement hd already just in case mine has lived its last day. If the RAM upgrade solves the problem then i can knock up an external hd for my wii with the spare

I will post the error codes when i get home.
