if you got a legal licence of your windows os you can take security essentials works fine on my machine for about 1 year,

or you can use the avira antivir from http://www.free-av.de/en/index.html it's free to use as personal edition. it updates every day

I switched to AVG after one virus-episode... I got a file from the internet and scanned it. The antivirus program I then used (F-Secure) showed no problems. So I run the file and later noticed weird outbound connections. Luckily I was able to fix the problem and the virus was not severe.

After that I used Jotti's malware scan to check the file. Jotti's scanner scans the uploaded file with many scan engines. Result was interesting, there are 20 scanners but only 4 detected the file. Those were AVG, NOD32, Sophos and Virusbuster. It took very long time until other scanners were updated to detect the file, maybe 1-2 weeks.

That was just one file, but it shows that you can't 100% trust just one AV-program, even if it's big name in AV business.

allmost all posts that say a virusscanner is crap are crap themselfs..

Please tell us WHY a virusscanner is crap..

AVG and Avast are the most known, I used Avast a long time but AVG uses less resources: that means your pc will be faster with AVG.

                        good luck!

                                +1 MS Security Essentials

I recently upgraded to Microsoft Security Essentials after AVG missed an infection - have found it to be very good.
