Installing Xp Pro onto a CF52 Toughbook with windows 7

    Hi Guys,

I just picked up a very cheap brand new windows 7 CF 52 toughbook. I want to install XP pro onto it and not 100% where to start. I have tried booting the laptop with the disc in drive and it comes up with blue screen of desk. "A problem has been detected and has been shut down to prevent damage." not sure if this is a corrupt disc.

If I try to run the disc straight from windows then it does not give me the option to learn.

Do I need to format the harddisc first before trying to install the XP?

bsod is normally caused by a fault within the operating system that is loaded on the pc not with the disc.
format the drive first then load the o/s you want.
just a thought did you change the boot option in the bios before trying to install xp.

What version of Windows 7 is on there and why do you want to run XP?

If you have Win 7 Pro, Enterprise, or Ultimate.... then you can download a free Win XP Virtual Machine to run inside of Win7. It's called "Windows XP Mode" and can be downloaded here:

      More info here with screenshots:

It's pretty slick and very useful if you have legacy apps that are not supported in Win7.

Oh BTW... your issue with the BSOD may be caused by a setting in the BIOS.

Look in the BIOS for the hard drive settings. See if you can locate one of the items set to "AHCI". Change this to either "Compatibility", "IDE", or "ATA" and it should resolve your BSOD.

A lot of new computers are having this issue. All of our new Dells at my work have to move from AHCI to ATA in order to boot our Win XP install CDs.
