YES, better are format this hdd, its can take some time depends of hard disk size u can do fast format but I'm recomend you to do full disk format. (Its can take some hours).

format you can do installing Windows at selection partitions where you want install your windows, and its ask you what to do leave what this are or format fast or normal NTFS system.

          Good luck.

you don't need to format the disk, windows installation do it for you, you just have to choose the disk the windows installation shows, and that's it

              regards

                Format HDD in system NTFS.

                  Desert camel here!

                  I've read here:

why don't you try to fix the old broken hd with a low level format?
I don't know your problem but I had some troubles with my own and now I fixed it but it runs at 440 gb instead of 480 (nominal capacity is 500gb). maybe I was lucky... but I would try this before throw away the piece.

PS: but remember that you loose all your files if you format your hd.

If it's a brand-new drive then I would just go for a 'quick format' during OS installation. All new drives are tested at the factory, so there's really no need to waste time on a full format. If offered the choice, choose NTFS as your filesystem on a Windows machine.
