I have XP installed now, but it is an unliscenced copy, will this upgrade over it? Also, if I need to re-install Win7 at all, do I have to install XP again?
thx

licenses don't matter - I have never owned ANY licensed software - It can be done but you first need to upgrade to vista ultimate (hooky copy is fine) - some other versions will also work - then upgrade to 7, the cleanest way though is to download windows 7 easy transfer tool, export all files & settings to a different hdd or partition, format C drive and do a clean install, then use easy transfer included in win 7 to set it all back, you will however need to re install your applications

I agree.
From my experience even direct upgrade from xp to vista is a nightmare.
Simply do a clean install of 7. Transfer documents, and oh yeah crack it - no activation...
just do a clean install. it will save you from likely tears and despair! :P
Yes, do a clean install. I bought my Windows 7 upgrade CD but installed it clean and activated it without CD-key from previous version by following Paul Thurrott's article (http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/cle...rade_media.asp). That was 8 months ago though and don't know if the precdedure still works.
