to watch skyplayer you have two options
set up a "my sky account" at sky.com, I think you'll need your sky card number, and account number, then just watch on laptop like you would bbc iplayer
or
make sure your windows media center has all the most recent updates, then you should have the option to install skyplayer into WMC, under TV option. click on link:

as for dongles, I use a vodafone, pay as you go, minimum top up is ?15 and gives you 3gb of data, if your in a city/town center, the speed isn't bad, but if your not in a built up area then your likely to loose 3G signal and go to GPRS, which is pretty poor, there are contract dongles but you would have to shop around!retupmoc eht ni deppart m'I !pleH -

your not actually downloading the football/golf but streaming the pictures through your web browser in which case you might be ok with 1gig, as virgin is a monthly contract i suppose you could increase it to 3gig if its not enough, or by a dongle and use payg.sigpicComment

the link is to a mobile broadband calculater which allows you to include streaming video so can include it in your choice of which package to get.

As far as bandwidth usage is concerned, there is no difference between streaming & downloading.
Effectively downloading = streaming + saving to disk.
Using BBC iPlayer as a guide, since they give the option of downloading or streaming the same content:
allow about 500Mb/hr usage.Comment

"Wifi USB Dongles
Mobile broadband uses the 3G network of mobile phone companies. But these mobile broadband plans also give you a chance to avail of amazing WiFi connectivity. This is why a mobile broadband dongle can also be called a WiFi USB dongle.
Obviously, WiFi USB dongles are offered by the very same service providers of mobile broadband. When you avail of mobile broadband plans, one of your great benefits is access to the WiFi hotspots of the network. With your WiFi USB mobile dongle, the ways to connect to the Internet to check your favorite websites, view YouTube videos, or connect with your friends on Facebook just increase and got easier."
you still have to top up your dongle to use the wifi.sigpicComment
