    reducing movies down

I am up to my limit of my external hard drive with movies. 1TB.
This is on my TVPC as I call it, HTPC.
Some of my biggest movies are towards 11GB each. I appreciate that Big = Quality (so the women say) but rather than junk the movies I am thinking of reducing them in size.
What do you reckon is the best and fastest program for this?
And one that retains a good bit of quality.

      THE TRUTH
      The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

yeah, suppose that is one answer.. trouble is, I am only on a 7 day thing with vermin, not any 800 day retention doo dah, Was hoping for a different answer. I know dvd shrink does it.. But it takes ages.

Well short of converting them, you can delete them when watched?

Suppose you could have multiple hdds for your movies, 1tb drive is quite large for a movie collection tho

surprising how fast it fills tho.
I guess I had better start D/L movies of lower size.
Still no-one has recommended a program tho... for reducing what I got.

Most of the software that converts for iPods should have a generic option that will allow you to re-compress to a more manageable size.

Any DVD Mobile used to be excellent, but I gave up when they upgraded and the sound sync problems started - they may have resolved them by now.

I'm using DVDFab at the moment to compress to a generic DivX format - takes a bit of messing around to get the quality that you want. It's OK but not that fast - direct from a regular DVD9 to a 1.3Gb movie file with twin-pass encoding is about an hour (two year old Core 2 Quad with 4Gb RAM).

                  Hope this helps,
                  Spacerat

ConvertX will do it fairly quick, why not do that then put on DVD if they are films you want to keep.

.mkv are the big ones. I tried dragging one in dvd shrink, but it wouldn't touch it.
The .avis are usually alright size wise.
