Wireless hack???

Hello guys. I have a question for some who is better than me in this area. I have changed my place of living, now in a different city. I don't have my own internet. My net is provided by my flat renter. He gave me to use his router via wireless network. Our comps are now connected. Please tell me is there a way that he can break into my computer and how can I protect from that?

What version of windows are you running mate?

You will need to beef up security, first off make sure your user account is passworded, also if you goto network, see if you cant see his pc from the router, this can work both ways

I am running XP SP3 mate. I am just firewalled. Nothing else. This is the first time I meat this kind of connection so it is not fimiliar to me. Thanks Cunny. Btw. Are you not watching football? We sure do miss Scholes on midfield

Well anyway when i set up my laptop to be able to access my files from the pc, over the wireless network, the account on the pc is password protected, it asked for the login details. It wont let you in without the correct details.

You could also set ownerships in the security tabs of files that you dont want others to see.

You could also consider winrar and group some up and use a password to protect the .rar file

hey,you don't have to bother with all the protection you only have to put a program "wireshark" and it should show you if someone gets into your system from your network. Only you must run ti when you are on the net sou he can follow your network transmision. If the landlord enter into your computer you can easily show him this program. I didn't mentioned that it very easy to use him. lp

The first step to IT security is physical security. If he can get access to the computer when you are not there then is doesn't matter what else you do, you have already lost. (True crypt is the only possible why to limit it.)

well if i were to access your pc, i would check to see what ports are open, do you use ftp alot? guessing you do?

find a firewall that monitors all ports and set it to permision needed and you should be ok

don't forget though.. even though you may be able to secure your computer's files from other users on the network, and lock down your ports, his network is acting as as a gateway and even though it may be secured with encryption to stop unknow users getting in... all the data packets you send over HIS network are vunerable to being sniffed .. in the same way scammers set up fake internet access-points in popular places like airports or cafes and watch for interesting data packets like passwords, credit cards, logins....

maybe a bit paranoid maybe, but quite easy to do.

It will be either low signal strength or low link quality. You could look at updating the drivers for the wi-fi, but it could be a sign of the wi-fi unit dieing a slow death, try an external dongle or move closer to the router.

I have a Samsung N130 that's got a ~~~~ed wi-fi unit. It will sometimes pick up a signal, but won't work correctly unless I'm less than a meter away from the router. ~~~~ing long cable would be better. Now using a 1000mW USB dongle with a 15bdi external antenna, now getting signals from 2 streets away

got a question if you dont mind. How hard is it for someone to hack your facebook and send messages under your name"? It happened my father a little while back and he wanted me to ask about it. And if so is there any way to track it.

More than likley his password has been compromised by him loging into a fake facebook page... get him to change password asap. As for tracking it, i think you'd be pissing in the wind.

firewalls software on windows and hardware if possible
turn off pc when not using by power and disconnect the wireless usb or remove the antenna
to ensure no data is being sent or being recieved when your not there.

physical security is a good method to have it can help a bit but like any
security or algorithm based security its will just slow someone down it rarely stops the person.

i agree with dctyper and drawflex for the reasons about the insecurity of such a
connection because youd have to trust the person ALOT to have such a network
connection but even then you wouldnt share these kinda things.there are so many
risk's involved

like dctyper mentioned ports should be closed/stealth ftp for example if a person
had such access to ftp may be able to copy your hd and files.

drawflex also mentioned the internet traffic and packets it proberly the most inportant
thing you have to protect because its your everyday information.the router on basics can
detect what sites you log on and where just on if setup.if a person were using software
to sniff packets then could possibly get secure information.

recomending changing every password and important detail on accounts if you change internet.

its a lot safer to have a seperate internet on your own where your in more control.
