    windows 7

I have purchased a windows 7 legit copy(I know idiot, but it was cheap) through software for students, 2 problems

a:Its an upgrade and I dont have a legit copy of anything and it is a clean drive so clean install

b: it comes as a download and I ordered win7 64 bit, the download is 32 bit, the machine is 64bit processor.

anyone offer advise on the above, for instance will the 32 bit run on a 64 bit machine ok, and will I be able to install the upgrade over a non legit vers of windows ?

your 32 bit version will run on your system, but the problem is the o/s you have bought needs a o/s in place to upgrade from which according to your post is a clean drive and from what i have read it needs to be a legit windows installation in place for it to work.

I bought a copy of win 7 64 bit from software4students, sent as an upgrade disc.

You can perform a fresh/clean install (best way, in place upgrade from vista is a waste of time), as this is how you would have to upgrade from win xp.

My version didn't check for an existing install of windows and I activated it online as normal.

I've even changed motherboards since then and done another clean install on a formatted HD and worked perfectly again.

If you are worried download a copy of XP that you can "activate" in some way from somewhere , i.e. torrents, then perform a fresh install of win 7 on top. It should detect the XP install and then give the usual install options.

HI skegs. you could contact them via email and explain that you have purchased the wrong version and see if they will let you download the 64 bit version as it will run better on you're machine.
Students are always messing things up so I am sure you will not be the first person to approach them with this issue.

Which would in all likelihood link you to another forum with the same question answered by people you don't know or have any idea if you can trust in fact id bet there would even be some user posting on there that that other person should just google it...

Way to contribute fncisco. You've done the thread a great service.

I think fncisco has never been part of a decent forum before.

@ fncisco if you haven't taken you're own advice and googled off ......DK is more than a forum it is a place where we have a decent community of members with a number of regulars who are glad to help others as they can.

M$ let you do a format with the upgrade cds they issued at first, not too sure about recent releases. I have formatted my pc numerous times with it, lent it to people who just have serials and no windows cd. All worked fine. It also come with the x64 and x86 versions on the disc.

Set bios to boot from cd/dvd
See if it boots and lets you format and install windows direct off the dvd

Alternatly you could always have downloaded a copy of the version you need/want and use the serial you have

As for googling answers, most answers come from within forums like this, let it be aimed at cars/DIY/coputer issues/satalite and cable tv ect. My point is, google is only as good as information posted onto the interned on forums like DK.
