    Portable External HDD showing wrong capacity

    Guys,

    I recenly bought a Iomega 1TB External HDD, new in the box.

    my question is after attaching it to my laptop, and checking properties the free space is only 931gb?

    I could understand the hidden files and folders which take space of around 10gb, but missing a massive 70gb, thats very unusual.

    please advise.

      not that unusual

      yes it is a lot oof space, but my Mextor backup hdd is about 60gb under the advertised 640gb

          I am not shore but you may need to format the new disk for maximum space.
          Tools owned: Hammer, Chisel, Crowbar, Punch, Chainsaw, Cutter and Brain!!!

                  pc's read the size of hd's in mb's gb's which is not the manufactors way of reading a hd but the size is also rounded up by the manufactor so you useually get a few gig missing.
                  its all technical stuff i'm not really up on.

                  the other option is that you can use partition magic to read and format the hd and it will update and recognise more of the hd...your system then seeing it more like the size you purchased.

                          Sounds about right. When I first got my 500gb HD it showed a lot less than 500gb. I remember looking it up and it was something to do with the way your pc calculates the amount on the HD. Nothing to be worried about really.
