upgrade to win 7 64 bit

Hi peeps...... a bit of advice please...... a while back a good friend of mine who is an it guru sent me a legit product key for win 7 ultimate that he got from his works..... I downloaded the win 7 off torrents and installed and activated fine and have been using it for ages now. My question is... I have just found out the laptop its on can run the 64 bit version, can I "obtain a 64 bit version" and use this product key or wil it be a key for 32 bit only?

If it wont my other mate has 64bit vista ( legit ) which he said I can install....is 64bit vista any good?

    Many thanks for any advice

when you buy a 7 disc it contains both 32 and 64 bit versions in the package but only one product key so i would imagine it should be good for the 64 bit version.

*update* I downloaded a 64 bit of windows prof ( It was the only 64 bit one I could find with reasonable seeds!! ).... installed it but key would not work as it was not compatable with that version...the 32 bit one I have installed is ultimate...will try and obtain a copy of win 7 64 bit ultimate

The original Win 7 disc checks to see if your PC can run 64 or 32 bit versions and then installs the most suitable one, so I suspect your PC will only run 32 bit if that was an original disc you installed from.
Edit:- just read your post again, perhaps if you get a torrent that has both versions on it you can get 64 bit to install. Do not use Vista it was a disaster.
