Maybe of course it's stupid advice, but check your volume settings.

Just to add, I cannot find windows defender on my system and have no recollection of it ever having been there.

Now its getting ridiculous windows security saying Realtek drivers cannot be verified and firefox keeps crashing.

I've just checked my updates and I also have KB915597 waiting to be installed, but not sure whether to install it now, it says:

"install this update to revise the definition files used to detect spyware and other potentially unwanted software. once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed"

but I also noticed another update - KB976902:

"Install this update to enable future updates to install successfully on all editions of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. This update may be required before selected future updates can be installed. After you install this item, it cannot be removed"
I don't Know if you installed this but there are reports on Microsoft forums, that it is causing problems of all sorts.

There are a number of issues with this update.
doing a complete reinstall seems a bit hasty. You could check out the microsoft newsgroup for a fix for the issues.

presently their support site is "temporarily down" so I couldn't look for a fix but here is the link

                  Service Temporarily Unavailable

or you could try disabling windows defender.

There were a number of issues when this defender update was first issued including failure to install cleanly.
this is an old update and the fix seems to have been patched with later updates you might be best to enable it again and check for newer updates.

It seems strange that this update was only just done.
was it windows update that recomended this update or are you using an update checker manufactured by someone other than microsoft? Go to your windows update in your start menu and try checking for updates again.

I know you already checked some of the settings but If doing all the relevant updates does not work then re-check all the hardware settings
,to check all the hardware settings, try working through these steps

It may have been sitting in the background, I seldom turn my pc off, but had to turn leccy off yesterday, when It was turned back on the problems started. I may be way off with the defender update, but it is the only thing that changed on my pc, so therefore seems logical, not always the right theory when it comes to pc's I know , Ive bought a new sound card, creative labs, gonna shove it in and see what happens.

Ok, further update, now have sound with the new creative labs card in Firefox continues to crash though, I uninstalled it and reinstalled but still no joy, though it may be due to keeping my previous settings/addons etc. Arghhhhhhhhhhh

I take it you have an up to date antivirus installed on your pc?
you should also avoid running the latest beta version of firefox and stick to the reasonably stable 3.6
when you uninstalled it did you do so from the add/remove programs in the control panel?
you can sometimes get problems with the firefox extensions like java ,adobe flash or extensions added when you installed other programs
Depending on the crash type there are different methods of fixing it.
