    Any overclockers here?

I've finally got my new system working. Now I want to overclock it a bit. Done a little bit of reading, but at the moment I'm still lacking in a lot of need to know knowledge.

    Here's the current hardware...

    Gigabyte GA-G41MT-D3 iG41 Socket 775 DDR3 Motherboard
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5GZh 775 1333FSB
    Kingston 4GB DDR3 1333MHz HyperX Memory 1.65V Non-ECC CL7
    Elite 500W PSU

I am aware this should be able to hit 3.3Ghz and remain stable with this processor. But every time I've tried to change the FSB it fails to POST.

Just updated Easy Tune 6 but not rebooted yet. Hope it's gonna make my life easier, but any help from those that know the pain of OC would be appreciated.

i'd guess your problem is your ram not liking your new FSB setting, upping the FSB speed directly affects the ram speed too, there'll be a FSB/RAM ratio setting in your BIOS you can tweak, drop it back a few nothces until you get a number under 1333.....

You wanna aim for a FSB of 440 to get a 3.3 Ghz overclock
Recommend upping the juice on your Vfsb and Vcore settings to 1.45 volts if you don't have any luck with standard settings.

Got a half decent CPU cooler ? If not, i'll vouch for the tuniq tower 120 extreme SEEN HERE

Run prime95 and coretemp together for a bit when you're done to check stability, and make sure your coretemp values don't skyrocket.

Got a q6600 in my puter that's been overclocked since i bought it a good few years ago... be sorta rude to buy a core-2-quad and NOT overclock it..... any more info you want... gimmie a nudge

have a lool here m8 Help Overclocking q9550 on Gigabyte GA-G41MT-D3 - Overclockers Australia Forums if this is the same board as yours then "This board has a FSB wall of around 340" your board may be limiting the potential of cpu

yeah, agree with matey above re: your mobo a big factor in limiting overclock potential.. your processor has a low multiplier/high bus speed ratio, compared to most of the Qxxx range (7.5 multiplier x 333 bus = 2.5ghz ) since you can't increase multiplier, your only choice is to ramp up the bus speed, but seeing as multiplier is reletivley low, you need to ramp up bus speed a lot to see decent results.. eg ramp up bus by 100 mhz, x7.5 multiplier = 750 mhz core clock speed increase... to get the same increase on my q6600 with a multiplier of 9, only needs a 83mhz FSB jump, budget mobos don't like high bus speeds either, so your a bit stuck with a CPU that needs a high FSB increase to see a decent OC, and a mobo that's prob already near the end of it's FSB comfort zone.. you may be asking too much... but ramp it up in little notches till you find the 'breaking point'. ...... post how you got on .

At the end of the day.. it's a free upgrade whatever you get, 2.5Ghz Q8300.... ?107, 3Ghz Q9650.... ?264.68 (albeit with more cache)
And i wouldn't bother with AI-tune or other such tosh.. all the real OC stuff is done in the BIOS...learn what everthing means/does.

anyone wondering what the fcuk i'm on about : see here

UPDATE : I've read in a few places that your CPU isn't a great overclocker.
