    why is there black borders top and bottom?

      Because widescreen TV's aren't really cinema widescreen ratio.(apart from a couple that Philips make)

              maybe cos your aspect ratio is wrong on tv too

              16/9 is the standard widescreen commonly used in tv

              In film, a widescreen film is any film image with a width-to-height aspect ratio greater than the standard 1.37:1

                  Also, not all widescreen films are made to the same ratio.
                  Italian widescreen was a toss of a coin at one stage with the huge border top and bottom.
