sly + pvr functionality post-subscription

My daughter has just stopped her sly sub and has discovered that she has to pay ?10 per month to continue to use the pvr function. I couldn't believe it myself, but it seems to be true.
I read somewhere that if you change the hard disc in the receiver you can get it to work without getting ripped off by sly.
Has anyone any info on whether this is correct?

Without a Sky Sub the PVR will no longer function, nowt you can do to the Sky box to change that..
