    Streaming unit

I have not long bought a apple tv 3 and although it is good until they jailbrake it I won't get the most out if it and I don't fancy converting all the mkvs
So was wondering if the wd live is any good or the boxxee ? I don't fancy buying another unit to try it so anybody got any of these and what are ur views ?
    Thanks griff

wdtv live is the dogs bolox plays any shite, it also works with a home media server ( like the one in my sig ) you can stream from your computer with the wdtv live and there is some internet content included with the wdtv utube amongst others, if you use a home media server with the wdtv there is a lot of other stuff you can stream to your tv as well

boxee all the way... wdtv is good for what it does, and the boxee is more expensive, but the boxee is relatively future proof
        Fave replies from various threads

1: What the fff is all that about??? All that crap below your reply I mean, get a life mate

I have just been to the gadget show and seen the live box and it did look good but always wondered what the boxxee box is like ? I just want to stream mkvs from my comp upstairs which I know the live will do and cheap but wondered if the boxxee was worth the extra ? I wouldn't mind it looking good to like the films coming up in the pics with info bit like Xbmc and also a bit of future proofing. I take it the pic quality is the same and they do dts pass through ?

I went for a different direction.

I got the noontech V8 HD NAS. Excellent bit of kit for ?90.

It's a media streamer with a NAS built in (i've put a 1tb hard drive in mine). Unlike most of the competition it has a gigabit network interface, USB 2 & USB 3 ports, optical & coaxial digital out.

It plays everything i've tried. It will stream from any shared folder/drive or the internal or an external hard drive.

Having the gigabit network interface it will stream full 50gb blu-ray disks over the network (providing the sending pc also has gigabit & the router).

It does network mapping so you don't have to keep browsing the network for your files.

It will display the menu from DVD or blu-ray ISO's.

              Full 1080p full surroundsound 7.1 or 5.1.

Plus being a nas you can download with it, torrents or p2p, if you feel that way inclined.

Also, like the PS3, it defeats Cinavia providing you use the optical audio out and a DTS amp, just like the PS3.

Lol I was just about to make a thread simular to this...

What id like to setup (ultimately), is a htpc/media server with all my media on, but to be able to connect to it, via a set top box(es) (dreambox?) and be able to access the media on the server use be able to somehow use apps such as Netflix Netflix and such, the idea was more of a concept idea I had today.

Maybe on some sort of VPN, so even if I am out, I could use a VPN connection to access my server or be able to connect for football/boxing etc when I am boozing at a friends house, and also keeping the cost of these additional services down as we can share the fee.

Which probably in more words is almost what you are more or less doing here.

I had a look at noontech and my Firefox wouldn't go to the website because of viruses ? Ha
Seen a few reviews of them and they werent that good ?? Never use 1 so wouldn't want to risk it.
So my choice is between boxee and wd live. I have seen the wd 1 and it did look good but haven't tried the boxee. Does the boxee bring the movies up a bit like Xbmc with metadata ?

Yes I noticed their website had been attacked.

I can't say I have had any problems at all with the box.

I was a bit in two minds at first having never heard of them, but I'm glad I took the plunge.

It's incredibly well built, and just works.

The internet TV and radio is crap as it goes to their servers, but it does mean it isnt restricted by where you live, although the channels are all unknown. But I didnt want any of that. I wanted something that would handle full blu-ray ISO's over then network and this does but the WD ones don't.

                        Hi Captain,

I have the V8 Nas as well but now want to change the software to something similar to the windows media centre in windows 7... so I can add metadata to the files to get a ultimate HTPC feel.... Any solutions??
