Basically I'm after something (without freeview) that will allow me to record/pause/rewind my tv. Is there such a thing? Or am I just going to have to buy a freeview recorder?

I guess you'll be needing to buy a Freeview Recorder.
Something like this would be a cheap and cheerful option, simply uses a memory card for recordings/pause/rewind live TV..
