How to get rid of the black lines

Hi, does anyone know if there is a software that will get rid of black lines on backed up Dvds in avi/divix etc format. I've tried zoom feature on TV but it just eats into the sides. I want to get rid of those black lines that are at the top and bottom, a software that will allow me to reformatt and change the aspect ratio so that it will fill the whole screen. Thanks

I suspect this is a feature of your encoding resolution and your playback ability of your TV. Does it happen on any TV?

Yeah it happens on any TV, its the way the orginal aspect ratio is on the DVD, I'm sure we've all have dvds that do that, its so anoying. I wanted to be able to rip the dvd and change the aspect ratio to widescreen and get rid of those black lines.
