gentoo
I tried many many distros during the years, but i'm running on gentoo for the last 4-5 years.
Ubuntu is very newbie friendly and also currently the most popular, and easy on the windows 2 linux transition, but for my taste too windowish for the same reasons.
Also, whats with the dash shell :sComment

Slackware forever! Everything is clean and simple, with NO underground/background staff happening without your intervention. Ubuntu seems a lot like Windows in problems and ways of solving them. Plus, every package is as close to its original form as possible. I use it from very important servers for the clients to desktops. With slackware you can never go wrong.Comment

All are ok depends for what you use them.
eg : Ubuntu : Great as Windows replaicement
Centos/RedHat if you use it as a web/database server
Suse not so great but used alot for SAP applications.
The better question is what do you want it to do for you ?Comment
