Broadband amplifier

A mate is receiving broadband from a neighbours unsecured wireless network..but it's a weak signal
He purchased this recently from lidl as it says "intergrated broadband amplifier" on the box
But how does it actually work?? it says nothing about amplifying broadband in the instructions by the way,
and the only cables coming from it are the power source and the coaxial cables.

It's a TV aerial. The amplification most likely refers to the DVB-T signal, as I don't see how it could amplify wifi signals. Poor translation maybe?

Sorry m8 i should have added that im aware its a tv aerial...
I don't think it poor translation as their are similar DVB-T antennas for sale on ebay etc that also say "intergrated broadband amplifier"

I'm guessing that they mean it amplifies all frequencies, nothing to do with internet.

If he really wants to play, tell him to get one of these (or a similar high gain dongle with the RTL8187L chipset) & one of these

Together they will allow connections over a 500m radius (depending on weather & obsticles)

Interesting. Thanks for the info. 500m radius eh? Thats a lot of home broadband connections. Maybe I'll download Backtrack again.

This setup is on my netbook with a dual boot XP/BT4.

To give you some idea as to how much I like the high gain equipment....

My main PC has a less powerful RTL8187L chip set dongle (500mw) with a 15dbi gain antenna (similar to the one in my above post). During the amazing winter we had last year I remained connected to a router over 50m away with a tree, 2 exterior house walls & a mental blizzard between us...
My signal never dropped below 86% with 80% link quality.

My previous dongle (Linksys) didn't get connections anywhere near that quality over 20m with nothing in the way during the summer.

I've not had to pay for my broadband in over 5 years

I mainly use omni directional antennas. I do have a directional antenna, but it's just the same as omni, only with a metal plate to one side. The ebay listing is for an omni antenna

I have access to 4 sources at present, 2 with no encryption & 2 hacked.

BT4 is the easiest thing to use, after you've done a bit of reading. I have a walkthrough that can be PM'd if needed.

I use the RTL8187L chip sets as I know they have great driver support for monitor mode on BT4. They are also a favorite with the lovely people who make high powered wifi dongles.
I've not looked at wireless N support as everything's working fine as it is.

In the WEP doc the line...

#~ Aireplay-ng ?1 0 ?e (insert ESSID) ?a (insert BSSID) ?h (insert MAC for user) (name of device)




has never worked for me, not sure if either the '-e' or '-a' should have '--e' or '--a'. It could even be the '-h' that needs changing. But it never really effected my playing, most WEP keys were cracked within 5 mins.


@Billy. Not sure of anything with the DM800HD. Reviews state it works fine with Linux but has problems with Windows 7. I'm just not into the linux boxes since the death of my TGM220

I have just read through the WEP Process doc & found another error.

airodump-ng -w (file name) -c (channel) -BSSID (insert BSSID) (name of device)


There should be two hyphens before the BSSID

the correct line is...

airodump-ng -w (file name) -c (channel) --BSSID (insert BSSID) (name of device)
