Canker, I just got my Alfa long range wifi transmitter, but the antenna that come with it is only 5db. It found around 7 APs, most using wpa but apart from one, at 76% all the rest were 55%. I have ordered the 20 db Aerial ordered and was wondering what Kind of performance increase can I expect from going from a 5db to 20db.

    Regards

    Gerard

For every 3dbi increase it's twice the input/output power. Sadly that is in the perfect world of physics. In real life that power is reduced by the lengths of cable & power fluctuations.
But you will see a big difference with the 20dbi antenna.

It's also worth moving it around the house, from front to back. The higher you are the better the reception.

Because it also boosts the carrier. Ask your self this... What good would a wi-fi unit be if it can send out further than it can receive?

I got the Alfa AWUS036NH, It's a 2000mw b/g/n adapter. It came with a 5dbi antenna, but I've ordered a 20db one, which should be en route from China presently. I'm hoping to pick up nearby public wifi hotspots with it, but I'm also considering a bit of ethical hacking :P (ethical in that I'll refrain from hogging their bandwidth during peak hours).

Just realised you asked 'where' and not 'what' . I got it from eBay. I was pretty careful not to get a clone as I don't want it burning out after a few months, although you never know with these things.

P.S - Re previous post, I did mean to say 'adapter' as opposed to 'transmitter' however It was late and I was pretty groggy.

Done. Remember to amend the airodump-ng line; '--bssid' not '-bssid'
