The GrandStream IP phones are pretty good. Got myself a 200 series one (two SIP providers at once) off ebay for ?10. Something like - Grandstream GXP-2000 SIP VoIP Phone 4-lines | eBay

Phone basically just plugs into your standard router. Setup is fairly easy using a standard web browser on your PC. A number of providers will even auto generate the configs for your particular phone.

For service provider I tend to use a couple. Incoming calls are mostly Sipgate as you can get a regional number for free and they are pretty reliable (important for incoming calls). There outgoing call aren't the cheapest though so I tend to use one of the budget suppliers for most outgoing (voipcheap) calls falling back to Sipgate if the cheaper route fails.

thanks my router is upstairs but i have my dreambox connected by ethernet cable downstairs

would i be able to use this to work both phone and dreambox

3 PORT RJ45 LAN ETHERNET NETWORK CONNECTOR SPLITTER | eBay

as too run another wire would be a pain and i have been the wireless route before

or does phone need its own singular lead from the router

ideally i want 2 phones one in front room as a house phone

the other with more than one line can be upstairs near router anyway

Not sure of that as cant quite fathom what its actually for !

A simple hub or switch would do the job though. Something like -

        Edimax mini 5 Port 10/100Mbps Switch - Misco.co.uk

One line out of your router down to the switch and you then have 4 extension ethernet lines to play with.

forward port 5060 for SIP to target device.

check Tribbox CE / PBX in a flash / Elastix.
with that you can do all the fancy things providers offer.
you can have different trunkss / routes for making calls to save also if you want to go very in depth.

i recommend for an ATA linksys PAP2-NA there is many for $25 or so on ebay shipped and can shipped.
          It is a 2-line DEVICE.

turns one ethernet lead into 2 so i can put 1 in phone and 1 in box

if i get a switch like that one doesnt it mean i have too manually use each switch as required or does it do it automatically open them as required ?

Yes, but I cant see how it does it. Generally you cant just take a single ethernet connection to two devices. You need the functionality of a hub/switch.

Its all totally unsupervised and automatic .

Not sure that would be the thing you require !It seems to be a USB adaptor that allows you to connect an ordinary phone to your PC and then use that to make Skype calls. I dont think it will operate without the presence of the PC and probably only operates for the Skype service, not standard SIP.I'd guess what you really want is a SIP adapter but these often tend to be around the same price as a SIP phone so may hold no advantage for you.Something like - Linksys PAP2 ATA - VOIP - Comes with free cordlessphone | eBay be careful - a good number of those devices are provider locked so make sure the description specifies its unlocked to all providers as the above one does.
