hi wonder if any one can help ... my gf has always had problems with her wireless conection...she had a crappy laptop made by a company called hi tech i think and she had a belkin wireless router ...her wireless connection kept goin off intermittenly...we tried all sorts to get it working including phoning virgin ,her broadband supliers and belkin customer care . eventually we replaced her laptop with a new notebook and replaced the router with a new netgear one but the problem continues with the wireless goin off or not bein able to connect to the wireless. she s just phoned virgin yet again and they told her to ring netgear ....i would be interested to hear what people on here thought the chances it could be the router causin the problem particulary when the belkin one produced the same results ???? anyone any ideas how to solve her wireless problem ??? many thank s.....update; virgin says she is bein supplied with broadband signal ok , she put the cable between modem and notebook and seems to be workin ok ... so must be router ???? but seems strange two different routers are faulty ?? any one ideas ???
2 diff routers wireless still rubbish ???

have you tried moving the router? top of a tall bookshelf would probably be a good position to tryComment

It could be lots of your neighbours are using WiFi so there's little room left for your router. Remember all routers within range using a channel have to share the bandwidth of that channel. You could try changing the channel that the router uses for one of the less common channels.
Alternatively, the router may be near a source of interference. Things like mobile phone masts and even power lines can cause problems. The material of building construction where the router is situated can also cause problems. Some newer builds, for instance have heat reflective metallic foil lining inside walls - this creates havoc with WiFi. Again, you could try changing frequency but other than that there's unlikely to be any cost effective solution.Comment

Try a different channel you may have interference from other transmitters, default is usually 6 or 7 move to the top or bottom end of the channels.
Failing that try and find a router that supports dd-wrt or tomato and flash it with one of these, my wrt-54gs is a great router since it's been flashedComment

Or are ither devices affected. Do you have wired devices into it? If so do they drop out? Do other wireless devices dropout?
Also what do you do to get the notebook back online?Last edited by cunny; 6 September, 2011, 08:55.sigpic

Should be using DHCP to eliminate thisComment

What i would try would be when the laptop looses its wireless connection is this just to pin down where your problem is.
Open a command prompt and type ipconfig and press enter this will give you the ip address of the laptop. Unless you have set it on some strange range it should be 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.xxx (where xxx is another number between 1 and 254)
If the address is 169.254.xxx.xxx or if you have no ip address then you are not getting an address from the router. And you need to identify whether it is windows or the routers fault.
The way i would check what device is at fault is like this. You say she has a blackberry which i assume is connected to the internet through the router.
What you need to to is first make sure the blackberry can still get onto the internet through the router.
Then force the blackberry to renew its ip address that it gets from the router (i don't know how to do this as i don't have a blackberry) and see if you can still connect to the internet.
If you can then the router and you broadband is probably OK. And the problem probably lies with your windows.
If you have now lost connection to the internet from your blackberry as well then you possibly have a problem with your router issuing DHCP IP addresses to your network.
If however you have a 192.168.xxx.xxx address then try first force the computer to renew its ip address ( open a command prompt and type ipconfig /release then press enter then ipconfig /renew then press enter)
If you now have a 169.254.xxx.xxx address follow the steps above. If you still have a 192.168.xxx.xxx address the ping the router which normally speaking unless you have changed it is on either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (it should be the address that shows up as Default Gateway when you do an ipconfig). So type ping 192.168.0.1 (or 192.168.1.1) and then press enter.
You should get 4 replies something like Reply from 192.168.0.1 bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
If you get destination host unreachable or some other failure e.g. time out code then checking the wireless signal as suggested in the earlier part of this post is a good idea.
If you get a successful reply then what i would suggest is logging into the router by putting the 192.168.xxx.xxx address into your web browser and checking what the router thinks of its connection to the internet. The Netgear router i use has a Router Status page which will tell you what ip address virgin has given it this may be under a connection status button.
None of the above tells you how to fix it but it should at least tell you which device is at fault.
My guess would be that because your connection works when you physically plug a cable between you Laptop and you router then the suggestions about wireless signal from earlier in the post are correct.Last edited by Egren71; 9 September, 2011, 01:33.Comment
