virgin media 50mb on wireless

hi all i have virgin media 50mb when wired i get good 50mb speeds but on wireless on laptop its just over 20mb just wondering if i can change any settings to increase my wireless speeds or can i buy a different wireless card to connect to the router would prefer and internal card rather than usb tho

wireless is always slower, i think 20mb is about right onn wireless, ive got the 30mb and my wireless gets just over 10mb

On same service and on lappy cant get above 20mb either. Never looked into it as am said wireless will always be slower

I have Wireless N router on 5ghz & wireless N wifi in my laptop... If you're using G router 2.4ghz & G wifi in your Lappy then 20Mb is about all what you'll get..

You will never get a 50Mb throughput on wireless 54G .. You might connect at 54Mb, but your actual throughput speed will never ever reach this theoretical max speed.. With full signal strength 54g will give you from about 20 to 30Mb maximum throughput...

Its also about enviromental factors. The siting of any antenae can be crucial as can the type of walls you need to pass through etc. The number of near neighbours using the same channel can also have a very pronounced effect.

Generally, wireless only works at anywhere near the advertised speed when your devices are no more than a few feet apart. After that the speed will start to fall back quite rapidly. Microwaves also may not behave as you expect. For instance, its quite possible a wooden wall may block more signal than a concrete or brick wall thus causing a more significant speed drop.

here,s a screen shot of my toshiba laptop wireless download speed,replaced the standard intel mini pci card with a tp link 300n card from amazon about three week ago as soon as loaded card went from 54 to 300 but pretty constant anywhere between 160 and 300 never dropped signal yet range pretty good to about 115 in back yard where wireless g dropped out running this with a d link 615 wireless n router......http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...1&d=1318979201 sorry about the size guys you may be able to make it out with a magnifying glass!

yeh, i changed my router channel from auto to 11, worked a treat

Cheat, tell it you are in Japan and use channel 13, no one else will be there.

@ dctyper is your wirless card in your laptop a normal b/g one or have you upgraded it to a N one ?
