Using 2 wireless comps with same router

    Hi all,

I have been using my netbook wirelessly with BT Homehub 2 router. Both in living room. Performance great.

I have bought a dongle for my desktop situated about 50ft away from router.
    I get strength of "good"

Both perform well "singly" but when trying to use both at once...like wife and myself the desktop is more often than not "unable to connect to internet". The netbook performs well.

Is it possible to do this at all ?

If so is there something I have to adjust to make performance better ?

    All replies appreciated.

    Thanks

Find the best channel on your router thn set each device to a static IP and see how that goes.

Thanks for your reply again Rodbuoy.

Could you expand a wee bit ?.....in English..

A wee step by step when you have the time would be great.

      Thanks again.

it sounds like both computers are trying to use the same IP address.

you can set both of them to use a static ip address , that means it will only use that address.

if you look to the bottom right corner and see your internet access icon.

right click on it and choose "open network and sharing centre"

then you will see connections , next to it highlighted in blue , click on it.

        then choose properties

        highlight (TCP IPv4) then properties

choose use the following IP address, and set this to what you want to use, and same on other PC but a different address, example 192.168.0.10, and other PC 192.168.0.11

        then reboot both computers

Have tried your suggestion. However desktop (Vista) always is unable to connect to server unless automatically allowed to select own ip address.

          Netbook (XP) works whichever way

Knock off the password on the wireless network through your homehub settings and see if both can connect, if they can change the security type protection to wep and see if both still connect ok.

If they do then change back to your original password and security type and see if they still connect. I saw a problem like this before and this was the answer.

May not be it but may help.

Thanks for replies lads but none are working.

I will just use each computer on their own,

I never wanted to share files, only for missus to do EBay/QVC on one while I surfed on the other, but the desktop does not like it !

              Thanks again

See the laptop that you say you cant get a static ip,

set it to the IP range thats its on just now.

So if the router has gave it 192.168.1.101 then give it that.

Then the other one that did work give it a IP of +5 from the other one.

You might need to d/c the wifi connection then re join to get the static ip to work again.

                Setting up static ip.zip

Also what type of router is it? N ?

                  Hi Rodbuoy,

Tho router is BT Homehub 2.

The lappy has an address ending 254.

I have set the desktop to 253 and get the message "another item is using this address"

If I set it to any other address I get "unable to connect to internet"

If I set to auto, both work of sorts. The lappy is as good as normal, but the desktop frequently locks up. Seems worse if wife is using lappy for search while I try desktop for search at same time. When desktop does connect it takes forever to do so.

The lappy XP and the desktop is Vista.

IP addresses are not my strong point.

                  Thanks.

log the desktop on and connect then do this

Tell hub to always give same address
Go to Hub home page ***8211; 192.168.1.254
                    Click on A to Z
Scroll down and click on Home Network or DHCP table
                    Enter password if requested
                    Click on device
Click on yes next to Always use this address then apply.

Now take a note of the IP and do the same with the other device making sure they are diff IP.

If you can the one that was problematic do first then give the one you could set the IP to one 5 away from the other one.

When setting the IP you need to know the range that router is on and how many IP it will allow, all of which should or can be configured manually from the router webif

Also I think the router is a n graded router, look in the config for wifi mode and change it to g only and no mixed.

I take it both desktop and laptop are g.

                      Lappy is b/g/n

                      Dongle for desktop is TP-Link 727 n

                      So both would be n.

Did try but have to admit I have not got the slightest clue what I am doing !!

                          Don't understand hubs.
                          Don't understand IP addresses.
This is one of these things in life that has me beat even before I start.
Not understanding the slightest thing about it.

I will just use one at a time. I can live with it. A pest, but not the worlds end.

Thanks for your help I do appreciate your time, but I am flogging a dead horse here.
