    Networking upstairs

    Am in middle of decorating lads room, well ripping it out and was gonna run all ethernet leads upstairs with cat6 for media streaming around the house.

    SO these will be in the wall, 1 in each bedroom

    CAT 6 SINGLE FACEPLATE SOCKET RJ45 ETHERNET CAT6 | eBay

    Dint realise ethernet splitters were either or and not both all the time was gonna split at top of steps where i would be going under floorboards. Dont want to use homeplugs either.

    So apart from running indiviaul cables from a switch in lads room, anyone else got any ideas?

      Individual runs is always the best method. You can split one cable into two pair, (not recommended), and use the centre pairs 3,4,5,6 for ethernet, although outside the standards and will not allow you utilise POE in future.

      There are ethernet extenders you can use even over one pair, but at a cost both financial and bandwidth restrictive.

      Other than that a decent WiFi router with dual band 802.11n spec should do the job but again may be at a disadvantage when streaming media. However as it is only a home system it should be OK.


      BTW use a decent chrome plate and not the shite you have in that link you cheap barsteward

          Am thinking just running the single line for the time bein as my starting point. I could, actually run the other 2 lines in and leave them dormant within the floorboards and as when needed/ready run them.

          My other option is to chase the wall out, place tubes in, and go through the loft, as will need to do this to get the virgin tv in nice an neat

          I have a switch and router ready to go in the room so just a case of best way to run the lines now

              If you are doing any re-wiring best to do it all in one go as you said and that includes chases, conduits/trunking and any other drilling etc.

              It's a once off and to be honest Cat5E is quite sufficient for your needs, as I cant see you running 10Gb on your home network any time soon over Cat6.

              But I know that re-wiring is a pain as I done mine quite recently, but worth the heartache.

                  THe main room that will need it is the room thats getting a reskim so all good on that front.

                  Which way did you go with yours sats?

                      I went totally against what I told you and used Cat6

                      All run from my router, I have a small Comms Cabinet downstairs with a patch panel and cable routed from there to each room. All walls chased with 25mm conduits sunk in and cleated. And chased back boxes also so faceplates are flush to the finished walls.

                      I then have a wireless bridge extending the network down to the end of the garden where I have a games room with another DM800SR4 and it runs perfectly over the air.

                      I could have went and buried an external PE Cat6 but couldn't be arsed as I have a few bridges lying about.

                          Yeah thinking conduit route now, AS only 1 room getting decorated at a time, will run the lines but not chase them in until i decorate the other 2 rooms.

                          So back through the loft i go on this

                                  No mate. I want each room to have hard wired internet connection, for media streaming also.

                                  There's xbox's and other stuff that will require internet/network connections.

                                  I want 1 main line going upstairs from router/switch to feed the 3 rooms. Was just unsure which way to go as dint realise splitters were either or and not both.

                                  So what i gonna do is feed 1 room from downstairs to a switch. From the switch, run the cables into the loft (all chased in) and feed the other 2 rooms from there. Will chase the other 2 in when i come to decorate those rooms

                                      as SATSMO said its a pain in butt,my job was,as it involves 3 bedrooms,i had to take 3 cat 5s all the way round 3 rooms and a hall along skirting boards,the last one had to go over ceiling to reach back bedroom,see rough plan,
