vpn speed drops

hi guys been trying out a payed vpn over last 2 days and having some big speed drops

no vpn running iam getting a ping of 11 and speed of 31.78mbps

when running VPNUK L2TP iam getting a ping of 152 and a speed of 4.97mbps

when running openvpn-2.2.2 (tcp) iam getting a of ping 151 and a speed of 3.90mbps

when running openvpn-2.2.2 (udp) iam getting a of ping 155 and a speed of 3.31 mbps

is there any thing i can do to fix this ???

It also depends on what your system capabilities are. You must bear in mind that all your internet is now being encrypted so your processing speed etc comes into play when unencrypting.

Also, I would suggest hardwiring your network, as wireless on top of encryption can have a serious detrimental effect to your speed.

Firstly, where are you 'pinging' to ?

Bear in mind you are now effectively located at the site where the vpn is hosted. If thats in the USA then thats where your 'ping' will start from.

Its also inevitable that the ping will be longer. You now have an extra hop to your vpn plus the time it takes the vpn to decrypt the message and send it on to the next hop. An addition of 50mS-100mS is not uncommon for this process, especially if your using a distant vpn server.

Speedwise, 3-5Mbps is likely all you will get from a cheap vpn service. If you want 30Mbps type services through a vpn it will cost and you will likely be limited to either uk or near continental vpn servers. !

What you really need to do is decide what you actually need to encrypt. Its normally not necessary for everyday tasks like browsing or email collection. If you really need fast encrypted internet then its unlikely you'll be happy with the majority of cheap vpn providers.

ok done some more test and after all the playing around my root speed to the us is 7mbs max

Did you go for the vpn provider recommended in that video (StrongVPN) ?

If you did then you will need to pick a server located on the US East coast, ie WashingtonDC, New York, etc. Servers on the West coast will be way to slow (the guy in the video is in Japan, thats why he went for west coast). You'll need to experiment to find the East coast server with the best UK connectivity (ie, connectivity to a backbone exhange that has almost direct transatlantic access).

If you pick your server properly then you should be able to get around 10Mbit/sec download from that service.

Initially, i'd forget the media server stuff. Work on getting something like HULU working to your PC via the vpn. Once you have streaming into your pc working properly then you can move on !

no m8 tryed openvpn uk, can get HULU working on PC was just playing around with media player ther are a lot of pay move chs and sport chs working on the media player if i can just get the speed up abit

I'd recommend you to try alternative vpn providers. The StrongVPN one is fairly highly recommended and should be fast enough for what you want to do (as long as you choose an appropriate server in Eastern USA). Initially, just purchase a one month package (protocol doesn't really matter as long as you can set it up, pptp is usually cheaper but slightly more difficult to get working).

in my experience speed issues over vpn tend to be related to mtu.

try a ping <ip address> -f -l 172 and see if get a packets need to be fragmented message.

try ping again by reducing packet size by 10 until you get no fragemented packet

Once you have a ping value that is not fragmented increase your packet size in small increments and retest until you find the largest possible packet that doesn't fragment.

Take the maximum packet size from the ping test and add 28 to get your optimum mtu size

then change the mtu settings for the virtual vpn adapter

When your month contract is up, try a different vpn service. I had a problem like this as well, moved to noirvpn.com and all is well. Cheap enough to try anyway.
