    Hi there,

I currently have a linux server running and a dns address but just wondering if i can host a file on my server for somone to download from me i.e place a text file say in the root on my server and said person elsewhere goes to

    mydnsaddress.com/filename

It should be possible if your server allows FTP access or some form of web server interface to present the file to the client. You will also have to enable the appropriate port forwarding on your router, and ensure that "mydnsaddress.com" is pointing to the public IP address of your router.

If you do not have a static IP address, it may be useful to use Dynamic DNS to ensure that any time your IP address changes the DNS entry for "mydnsaddress.com" updates. Have a look at FreeDNS - Free DNS - Dynamic DNS - Static DNS subdomain and domain hosting for more details.
