What kind of link you have between the 2 floors? If it's ethernet (lan cable), just throw out that "repeater" and put in a switch.

Otherwise, you can access your (windows) network computer by typing the IP address of the destination. (on your laptop type \\IP-of-desktop). You can add your printer that way
Hit the Thanks button if I helped you!

Go into printer settings on your desktop and change the printer to " shared " then go on your laptop and do a search for printer on your network (Devices and Printers / Add Printer/Add Network Printer ) , you will most proberly have to enter the name of your desktop + the name of the printer . If you manage to find the printer you will then have to install the printer software on to your laptop. You will always need to have the desktop switched on when you want to print from the laptop.
I used to have mine setup like the way you want yours but that was many years ago so if I've fogotten anything I'm sorry.

You said your printer is connected directly to the desktop.

You can obviously share it on that desktop (Tigger001 has explained it already) and search for it on your laptop and connect and print. PROBLEM will be if your desktop is switched off then you won't be able to print.

Check if your printer has Ethernet Port and if it has you can connect it via cat5 cable to your router or switch if you have one and install network printer driver for that printer model (can be found on printer official site support section).

If your printer DOES NOT have ethernet port, you can easily get your self a little D-Link printserver and configure it.

                Hope this helps.

Guys your not getting it i can share a printer no problem the fact is i have 2 routers connected to my modem with 2 different gateways so whatever is connected to the 1 router it cannot find whats connected to the other router

this was done due to 4 story house with no wifi coverage in certain areas
Thought i would mention that but it doesn't matter no as i've purchased homeplugs and installed them all over the house

You have checked your firewall settings at all ends to allow ports and programs through?

I was about to say the same, ZoneAlarm was blocking my printer, I had to add an exception for it, even though it was "Allowed" in the program control.

what brand and model of printer are you using? are you using the same frequency-encryption-channel on the router and have you enabled upnp? so other computers can see your content that you are sharing (printer-doc-media files). are both copmputers running win vista 32 bits or 64. check under sharing center to enable dlna feature it may help

You sir may be spot on. I recall I had to do this to get my Nokia N95 8GB networked and with full permissions over it.

not sure if this is fixed. So both routers are running ddwrt

one the second route, under advance network set it to router and not gateway. Also disable any ddwrt firewall and upnp on the second router. Can you ping the desktop to confirm network connectivity.
