    Netgear Router upgrading firmware

My router is a DG834 v3 when I access the firewall settings page I cannot change any settings as the radio buttons are missing. I have read that if I load the latest firmware I can resolve this problem.
I am a bit of a novice regarding networking and need some advice regarding what settings to save if I do this. My wife works from home and has her PC LAN connected upstairs my laptop is wireless connected.
I will be in the doghouse :-( If I mess up her connection
I need to enable LAN through the firewall to connect my Technomate 6900 Super for CS.
If I load the latest firmware will this erase my settings? If it does what settings should I keep a record of to re-enter.
