In case there's any interest in this, here's an update.
I pretty much lost interest in getting dreamdroid/vu player working but I found, after getting a new router, that my original idea does work - and very securely.
After setting up my home router as an open vpn server I now have remote access to my network. This means I can just log into openwebif and view my box's content without having to open any ports etc.
