    A server?

ok... First what kind of server? If you wan't a file server (big Hardrive over network) try FreeNas. Has a nice WebGUI and it is allmost painless to install

I would definitely hardwire the server to the router, just so you have full 10/100/1000, if you are thinking about expanding to multiple clients.
