Revisiting usb dongle unlocking

I've been trying to unlock my ZTE MF627 usb mobile internet dongle, using the Globe Flashupdater, only to come up with problems. It backs up the rom then it tries to enter the download phase where it does the actual reflashing but fails with "Line 1 fail - please reset the modem manually" I've had a look through the last years posts here and on other forums on the internet but nothing has helped, although I did spot one lead that said Solved for this problem. Unfortunately it was a dead link.
Anyone managed to get through this?
