the drive must be made bootable
hXXp://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk. and configured in bios. (Hirens)

Once you have created your bootable drive, transfer the missing files or repair. If you have no important files a fresh install should resolve.Last edited by SouthernComfort; 19 April, 2011, 02:47."What we've got here is failure to communicate."Comment

Do you wish to repair or fresh install?
The reason I ask is the procedures are slightly different, both will require a bootable flash drive unless you can acquire an external optical drive and your chosen OS.
If you plan on a fresh install do you wish to upgrade to Windows 7?
Have just followed this guide which is pretty straight forward if you would like a fresh install.

To find a windows OS iso you would need to check torrents or newsbins, unsure of the rules so can't help any further sorry.Last edited by SouthernComfort; 22 April, 2011, 04:02."What we've got here is failure to communicate."Comment

Is the computer set to boot from disc in bios, usb legacy support should also be enabled.
Unsure about XP recovery disc, where did you acquire it?
The easiest method to fix your problem would be to download a complete XP iso and take it from there.
To restore a missing or corrupt ntfs.sys file you must have the Windows XP CD and follow the below steps.
1.Insert the Windows XP CD into the computer and restart the computer.
2.As the computer is starting make sure to press a key to boot from the CD.
3.In the Windows XP setup screen press the 'R' key to run the Windows Recovery Console.
4.If prompted enter the number of Windows installation you're repairing.
5.At the command prompt type the below command.
copy x:\i386\ntfs.sys c:\windows\system32\drivers
* In the above example you would replace x: with the letter of your CD-ROM drive. Many computers have the CD-ROM drive configured as the D: drive.
6.If ntfs.sys is still on the computer you'll be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file. If prompted, press the Y key for Yes to overwrite the file.
7.Once the file has been successfully copied remove the CD and reboot your computer.
Quick copy and paste from elsewhere, method applies."What we've got here is failure to communicate."Comment

Any windows XP iso will be fine, I suggest you look for one with SP3 included. Use the above method to repair.
If you wish to format with a fresh install, use either a windows XP or 7 iso, boot from disc, delete partitions, format, install, install missing drivers (if there are any).
To find a windows disc search torrents, newsbins or borrow one."What we've got here is failure to communicate."Comment
