GOT WINDOWS XP CD
loaded it on laptop
started to load files at the bottom of screen then
1 press enter to load
2 press r to repair
which ever one i choose it start up then i get
BLUE SCREEN
AT THE TOP IT SAYS WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION SET UP
AT THE BOTTOM IT SAYS
EXAMINING 15391 MB DISK 0 AT ID 0 ON BUS 0 ON ATAPI
iv left this on for about an hour and nothing else happens??

I had a similar problem and what can I say it's that the hdd was f..ked...

1 hour seems quite long, try the below method, if that does not work you can boot to a "live disc" (Hirens) and copy important files to flash or move HDD to another computer and copy important files. I would then recommend a low level format and a fresh install.


Boot from disc.
When completed loading files, you will be presented with the following "Windows Setup" screen, and your first option. Select "To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER". DO NOT select Recovery Console.



When presented with the screen below. press the F8 key to continue.



Setup will find existing Windows XP installations. You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation, or install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

If no installations are found, then you will not be given the option to repair. This may happen if the data or partition on your drive is too corrupted.

Hiren's BootCD 13.2

Download Hiren's from there, would like to rule out disk errors.
Once you have downloaded the zip file, extract the iso and burn to disc. This disc contains tools to test and fix your system.
Once the disc has booted you will be presented with an options menu, boot to mini xp.

Using this disc you will be able to transfer missing files using your flash drive or test and repair other errors. Once in mini xp browse to see if your HDD is mounted. If you can open the drive and navigate to the windows folder > system32 > drivers.

mate I'm convinced the hdd is gone, you have the exact symptoms I had, try to find that out also with hirens cd, it has many diagnostic utilities
