HP laptop problems

Hi all. to cut a long story short I have a HP laptop which has problems. Put it into pc shop to be fixed only to find out it is either Processor or mother board gone. How do I know which? is it through process of illimination? It is only 3 years old and I hardly ever used it.Trying to save music on the hard drive. I have a new processor for it but it looks very complicated to change it. Any idea,s anyone. Many thanks.

What is it actually doing can it power up? Does it go slow; also does it sit @ post boot and then state entering setup?
